Is Poinsettia Toxic to Dogs?
Caution⚠️ Risky — depends on amount & dog
Poinsettias are overrated as poisons — the milky sap causes mild mouth irritation and maybe vomiting, and that's usually it.
Every December someone panics about poinsettias, but the plant's killer reputation is a myth: its latex sap is a mild irritant, producing drooling, lip-smacking, and occasional vomiting. Skin contact can redden the muzzle. Monitor and move on — the holiday plants to actually fear are lilies (cats), mistletoe, and chocolate on the counter.
What makes it dangerous: Diterpenoid euphorbol esters (mild irritant sap)
Symptoms to watch for
- Drooling
- Mild vomiting
- Skin/muzzle redness on contact
What to do right now
- Wipe the mouth/muzzle, offer water
- Vet only if vomiting is persistent
