Is Sago Palm Toxic to Dogs?
Emergencyπ¨ Dangerous β act now
Sago palm is one of the deadliest plants a dog can eat β every part is toxic and the seeds are worst. Survival depends on treatment speed.
This popular ornamental is a genuine killer: cycasin destroys the liver, and just one or two seeds can be fatal to a dog. Early signs (vomiting, drooling) start within hours and can misleadingly settle before liver failure develops over 2β3 days. Reported survival with delayed treatment is only around 50% β the plant simply doesn't belong in a home with dogs.
What makes it dangerous: Cycasin (severe hepatotoxin)
Symptoms to watch for
- Vomiting (often within 3h)
- Drooling
- Diarrhea, sometimes bloody
- Lethargy
- Jaundice, seizures, collapse (liver failure)
What to do right now
- Emergency β go to a vet now, even if your dog seems fine
- Bring a piece of the plant or a photo
- Do not wait for symptoms; early decontamination saves livers
