Is Aloe Vera Toxic to Dogs?
Caution⚠️ Risky — depends on amount & dog
The plant is mildly toxic — the latex layer under the skin causes vomiting and diarrhea. Purified aloe gel in products is a much smaller concern.
Aloe's healing reputation applies to humans and purified gel — the whole leaf is different. The yellow latex just beneath the rind contains anthraquinone glycosides, natural laxatives that give dogs cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea; larger amounts can cause dehydration and lethargy. A small nibble is usually a rough day, not a hospitalization.
What makes it dangerous: Anthraquinone glycosides (saponins/aloin)
Symptoms to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
What to do right now
- Remove plant matter; provide water
- Feed bland for 24h if GI signs appear
- Vet if vomiting/diarrhea persist beyond a day or your dog is very small
