Will It Poison?

Can Dogs Eat Popcorn?

Caution

⚠️ Risky — depends on amount & dog

Plain air-popped popcorn is fine as an occasional treat — buttered, salted, or flavored popcorn isn't, and unpopped kernels crack teeth.

A few pieces of plain, air-popped popcorn are a harmless low-calorie snack most dogs enjoy catching. The movie-theater version is the problem: butter and oil add pancreatitis-level fat, salt adds sodium, and flavorings often include onion or garlic powder. Unpopped kernels are hard enough to fracture teeth and add up as a choking risk in small breeds.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Stomach upset after buttered/flavored popcorn
  • Coughing/gagging on kernels

What to do right now

  1. Plain popcorn: fine in small amounts
  2. Large buttery amounts: watch for vomiting; call vet if repeated
