Can Dogs Eat Almonds?
Caution⚠️ Risky — depends on amount & dog
Unlike macadamias, almonds aren't directly toxic — but they're one of the most common 'my dog got into the trail mix' calls because dogs don't chew them well. Whole almonds can lodge in the esophagus of small dogs, the high fat triggers pancreatitis in sensitive dogs, and salted/smoked flavors add sodium and spices. Almond butter in small amounts is generally fine; whole nuts are not worth it.
What makes it dangerous: High fat + obstruction risk (not a true toxin)
Symptoms to watch for
- Vomiting, diarrhea
- Gagging or choking (whole nuts)
- Belly pain after fatty amounts
What to do right now
- A few plain almonds in a healthy medium/large dog: monitor for GI upset
- Small dog + whole nuts, or a large quantity: call your vet
- Watch for repeated vomiting or a painful belly — pancreatitis needs treatment

Stop the next one before it happens
Most food poisonings aren't fed to the dog — they're scavenged from a bin, a counter or an open cupboard while nobody's looking.
Pet-Proof Kitchen Trash Can
A lid a dog can't nose open is the single highest-value change you can make: the kitchen bin is where a huge share of poisonings actually start.
Defeats the nose-and-paw method most dogs use on a swing lid
Airtight Food Storage Container Set
Moves chocolate, raisins, xylitol gum and baking supplies out of reach and into something a determined dog can't chew open.
Sealed and rigid — a bag or box on the counter is not a barrier
Magnetic Cabinet Locks
Child-safety locks work just as well on dogs and install inside the cabinet with adhesive — no drilling, no visible hardware.
Secures the low cupboards a dog can actually open
