Corn kernels are safe — but corn cobs are one of the most common intestinal-blockage surgeries in dogs. Never let a dog chew a cob.
Plain corn kernels are a normal dog-food ingredient and perfectly safe off the cob. The cob is the emergency: it's indigestible, exactly gut-diameter, and dogs love to steal them from BBQ trash. Cob pieces cause a high proportion of foreign-body surgeries every summer, and symptoms (vomiting, no stool, pain) can start a day or more after ingestion.
What makes it dangerous: Cob = obstruction hazard (kernels are safe)
Symptoms to watch for
- Repeated vomiting
- No stool or straining
- Loss of appetite
- Painful, tense belly
What to do right now
- Kernels only: no action needed
- Any cob ingestion: call your vet today — do not 'wait and see' more than 24h
- Vomiting + no stool after a BBQ = emergency visit
