Can Dogs Eat Avocado?
Caution⚠️ Risky — depends on amount & dog
Mostly no — avocado flesh contains only low levels of persin and a bite is rarely harmful, but the pit is a serious choking/blockage hazard and guacamole adds toxic onion and garlic.
Avocado's toxin, persin, is dangerous to birds and livestock but dogs are fairly resistant — a stolen bite of plain avocado usually causes nothing worse than mild stomach upset. The real risks are the large, slippery pit (a classic intestinal-blockage surgery) and the fat content, which can trigger pancreatitis in sensitive dogs. Guacamole is a different story: onion, garlic, and salt make it a no.
What makes it dangerous: Persin (mild in dogs) + pit obstruction risk
Symptoms to watch for
- Mild vomiting or diarrhea (flesh)
- Gagging, retching, no stool (pit swallowed)
- Belly pain, hunched posture (pancreatitis)
What to do right now
- Plain flesh: watch for stomach upset — usually fine
- Pit swallowed: call your vet now; blockages need imaging
- Guacamole: treat as onion/garlic exposure and call your vet
