Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter?
Caution⚠️ Risky — depends on amount & dog
Peanut butter is the universal dog bribe, and plain versions (just peanuts + salt) are safe in moderation. The danger is that a growing number of 'no sugar added' brands use xylitol, which is violently toxic to dogs — a tablespoon of a xylitol PB can be lethal to a small breed. It's also calorie-dense, so keep it to a lick-toy smear rather than spoonfuls.
What makes it dangerous: Xylitol (in some sugar-free brands only)
Symptoms to watch for
- (If xylitol) weakness, collapse, seizures within an hour
- Otherwise: weight gain, occasional stomach upset
What to do right now
- Check the ingredient list for xylitol or 'birch sugar' right now
- If xylitol is listed and any was eaten — emergency, call a vet/hotline immediately
- If plain PB: you're fine; just mind the calories

Stop the next one before it happens
Most food poisonings aren't fed to the dog — they're scavenged from a bin, a counter or an open cupboard while nobody's looking.
Pet-Proof Kitchen Trash Can
A lid a dog can't nose open is the single highest-value change you can make: the kitchen bin is where a huge share of poisonings actually start.
Defeats the nose-and-paw method most dogs use on a swing lid
Airtight Food Storage Container Set
Moves chocolate, raisins, xylitol gum and baking supplies out of reach and into something a determined dog can't chew open.
Sealed and rigid — a bag or box on the counter is not a barrier
Magnetic Cabinet Locks
Child-safety locks work just as well on dogs and install inside the cabinet with adhesive — no drilling, no visible hardware.
Secures the low cupboards a dog can actually open
