Is Tulips Toxic to Dogs?

Toxic

☠️ Toxic to dogs — avoid

Tulips are toxic to dogs, and the BULB is by far the worst part — a digging dog that eats planted bulbs is a vet call.

Tulipalin toxins concentrate in the bulb, which unfortunately is exactly what garden-digging dogs unearth. Chewed petals or leaves cause drooling and stomach upset; a swallowed bulb or several can add heart rate changes and breathing difficulty. Spring planting season and autumn bulb bags in the garage are the classic exposure moments.

What makes it dangerous: Tulipalin A & B (concentrated in bulbs)

Symptoms to watch for

  • Drooling
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Depression/lethargy
  • (Large bulb ingestions) fast heart rate, labored breathing

What to do right now

  1. Petals/leaf nibble: rinse mouth, monitor
  2. Any bulb ingestion: call your vet or a hotline
  3. Store bulb bags like you'd store chocolate — sealed and high
