Is Daffodils Toxic to Dogs?
Toxic☠️ Toxic to dogs — avoid
Daffodils are toxic to dogs — lycorine triggers heavy vomiting, and the bulbs also carry crystals that burn the mouth.
Daffodils defend themselves with lycorine, a potent emetic: dogs that chew them vomit hard and drool, sometimes with diarrhea and abdominal pain. Bulbs concentrate the toxin and add oxalate crystal irritation, and severe cases can show heart-rhythm changes or tremors. Even vase water picks up enough toxin to matter for a water-stealing dog.
What makes it dangerous: Lycorine + oxalates (worst in bulbs)
Symptoms to watch for
- Vomiting (often severe)
- Drooling
- Diarrhea, abdominal pain
- (Severe) tremors, low blood pressure, arrhythmia
What to do right now
- Remove access, including vase water
- Call vet/hotline for bulb ingestions or severe vomiting
- Small petal nibbles: monitor with water available
