Is Essential Oils Toxic to Dogs?
Toxic☠️ Toxic to dogs — avoid
Concentrated essential oils are toxic to dogs — tea tree, pennyroyal, wintergreen, and pine oils are the worst. Never apply them to a dog's skin.
Dogs lack some of the liver enzymes that process essential-oil compounds, so 'natural' doesn't mean safe: 100% tea tree oil applied to skin has caused tremors and collapse, and licked spills of wintergreen (basically aspirin), pennyroyal, or pine oils cause serious poisoning. Passive diffusion in a ventilated room is usually tolerable for dogs (cats are more sensitive) — direct application, ingestion, or heavy fog in small rooms is where trouble starts.
What makes it dangerous: Phenols/terpenes (varies by oil); dermal absorption is significant
Symptoms to watch for
- Drooling, pawing at face
- Oil smell on breath/fur
- Wobbliness, weakness
- Vomiting
- Tremors, low body temperature (severe)
What to do right now
- Wash oil off skin/fur with dish soap and lukewarm water
- Do not induce vomiting (aspiration risk with oils)
- Call a hotline with the specific oil name and concentration
