Is Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) Toxic to Dogs?
Emergencyπ¨ Dangerous β act now
Never give and never ignore β a single 200mg ibuprofen can cause stomach ulcers in a small dog, and a few can shut down the kidneys.
Human NSAIDs are among the top calls to every pet poison line. Dogs concentrate ibuprofen in ways humans don't: doses barely above a child's cause bleeding stomach ulcers, higher doses destroy the kidneys, and very high doses cause seizures. 'He seemed painful so I gave him half an Advil' hospitalizes dogs every day β dog-safe pain meds exist, but only from your vet.
What makes it dangerous: COX inhibition β GI ulceration, kidney failure
Symptoms to watch for
- Vomiting (sometimes with blood)
- Black, tarry stool
- Loss of appetite
- Increased thirst then reduced urination
- Wobbliness or seizures (high doses)
What to do right now
- Call a vet or poison hotline now with the mg strength and count
- Do not induce vomiting unless instructed
- Bring the pill bottle to the clinic
- Never self-prescribe human painkillers to dogs β including 'just once'
