Can Dogs Eat Macadamia Nuts?

Toxic

☠️ Toxic to dogs — avoid

No — macadamia nuts are genuinely toxic to dogs and even small amounts can cause weakness, tremors, and hind-leg wobbliness within 12 hours.

Macadamias are uniquely toxic to dogs through a mechanism science still hasn't pinned down. As little as 1–2 nuts per 10 lbs of body weight can produce the classic sign: hind-limb weakness that makes dogs wobble or struggle to stand, along with vomiting, tremors, and fever. Most dogs recover within 48 hours with supportive care, but cookies combine macadamias with chocolate — a double poisoning.

What makes it dangerous: Unknown toxin (dose-dependent neuromuscular effect)

Symptoms to watch for

  • Hind-leg weakness or wobbling
  • Vomiting
  • Tremors
  • Fever
  • Lethargy within 3–12 hours

What to do right now

  1. Count roughly how many nuts were eaten and note your dog's weight
  2. Call your vet or a poison hotline — recent large ingestions may warrant decontamination
  3. If cookies were involved, treat the chocolate too (use our calculator)
